Design Research

Research plays an important role in the design of buildings, and I often help in the gathering of images to use as precedents. Many times this means looking at projects the firm has done previously to serve as inspiration for new work. With a database of tens of thousands of images, hundreds of projects, and decades of continuous work, I have helped develop systems that allows the search of the most used images by program type, exterior expression, or other groupings that fill a need.

I also help with researching the latest trends in architecture as well as other firms that are major players in the various marketplaces. Other times it is more about communicating a certain look to a client, necessitating the creation of mood boards to establish a feel for a space in order to start a dialog and make sure all parties are on the same page before design begins in earnest. These images do not need to be strictly contemporary, and having a broad knowledge of architectural history is essential in drawing inspiration from the widest range of sources possible.
